new disc soon on 'another timbre'

the great UK label, Another Timbre, will be releasing by mid-July a cd containing some of my playing. It is a beautiful recording featuring myself, Stephen Cornford, Patrick Farmer and Sarah Hughes, and comprising of two pieces of improvisation and a realisation of John Cage's 'Four6'. The title chosen for the cd is No Islands and it will be part of a series of cds on the same label -released simultaneously- called Silence and After.

at46  No Islands  |  John Cage’s Four6 + 2 improvisations by Stephen Cornford [amplified piano] / Patrick Farmer [turntable & electronics] / Sarah Hughes [chorded zither] / Kostis Kilymis [electronics]

The music was recorded late March in Oxford by Simon Reynell and for myself it is a great memento from a handful of very fruitful days I spent with Patrick and Sarah back then, working on a bulk of music that walked the fine line between free improvisation and the realisation of open scores.

Many thanks to Patrick & Sarah; Simon for recording and making the music available; Michael Pisaro for the score that he wrote for us but one that we unfortunately couldn't capture in all its beauty; Q-O2 in Belgium; etc, etc...

-
other cds to be released on the same series:

Tierce. Jez riley French, Daniel Jones, Ivan Palackẏ.

Divisions that may be autonomous but that comprise the whole. Performed by James Saunders, Tim Parkinson, Angharad Davies, Philip Thomas, Rhodri Davies, Stephen Chase, Edges Ensemble.

Droplets. Dominic Lash, Patrick Farmer, Sarah Hughes. Improvisation & realisations of scores by Eva-Maria Houben and Taylan Susam

A Pauper’s Guide to John Cage & Early Morning Melancholia. Anett Németh.

Kostis Kilymis, Leif Elggren 12"

IF OTHER PEOPLE EXIST
[then they are totally sealed secrets]
Kostis Kilymis, Leif Elggren
1-sided 12"
Firework Edition Records / Excrete Music

Kostis Kilymis - electronics, objects
Leif Elggren - voice, text and dance

december 2010, we were all in Xanthi for Nicolas Malevitsis' "bye-bye butterfly" festival (aka: the closing down of all absurd operations), where I was to collaborate with none other than legendary swedish artist Leif Elggren. As usual, I had very few ideas on how our collaboration could turn out, only thing I knew was that Leif was only going to be reading from his texts and I would have to fill in the rest of the sounds. I guess lack of preconceptions helped in getting both our minds and spirits at the same place by the time of the actual performance, and the result was this powerfull 14 minutes of music that you can now find pressed to vinyl. Thanks to Leif & Nicolas for pushing the release forward.

I have few copies now myself, but you're better off getting it from Firework Edition Records or select distributors wwide

now on bandcamp

'temporary perspectives' is now also available as a digital release, through bandcamp. You can get it from this page here http://thesorg.bandcamp.com/album/temporary-perspectives

bandcamp provides downloads in many formats, including lossless ones, so you can expect to enjoy all the qualities of the music itself at a budget price, and without having to wait for the postman to deliver the cd at home

all organized music from thessaloniki titles will eventually find their way to this platform, and i'm curious to see how much interest there'll be in this.

syndromes sister overdrive track in compilation

a track by 'syndromes sister overdrive' (my duo with giannis kotsonis, more here) is now available in the 2nd annual protos orofos compilation.

protos orofos is an anti-venue in thessaloniki greece. Its compilations are cds available from free locally, and as downloads from the venue's website here.

the syndromes sister overdrive track was recorded during our concert there in october 2009, and it's called "μωβ και πράσινο" (that's "purple and green" for all you non-greek folks).

the old and the new

before i start a projected "avalance" of posts (by the standards of this blog anyway), thought i'd put up an oldie, something i'm still quite proud of, despite its very "basic" construction:

1.14 (slow ascension) by syndromesuploadcloud

this is pretty much the first thing i ever did. it was made using an apple powerbook's internal microphone + audacity. first appeared here http://www.noquam.com/ihatemusic/ihm_comp/main.html . different version appeared later on my ".accumulated" cdr [organized music from thessaloniki, 2008]

nn+ soundcheck

here's a recording that rounds up the previous two posts i've put up. it doesn't contain any sound from the performance (you can check the video if you want a taste of the juicy parts), but consists instead of a quick recording i did while setting up our equipment.

NN+ soundcheck by syndromesuploadcloud

the whole story goes a little bit like this: michalis kyratsous, corinna triantafyllidis & knot were organizing the TOT1.0 festival which would consist of perfrormances from two visiting musicians, a strong presence of local musicians and the usual cross-polination. In the process they thought it'd be a good idea to have some kind of dj set to open the fest; a different kind of dj set, though one that would add some spice to the usually clinical mood of improv nights. For this reason they called up nicolas malevitsis & nektarios papadimitriou who were thrilled with the idea and agreed on spot; they also suggested i got a leave from the army in order to be part of the set standing between the two of them, mixing the whole thing.

i had vague ideas of how intrusive i was going to be in what they did, but upon arriving in athens i realized that even they (up to the last minute) were not really very clear about who was playing what. In the end nicolas alternated between RRR-related noise and trashbin-variety 70s and 80s pop records from all over the map, while nektarios played some of his ultra-rare freakishly original exotic pop 7"s, and i was left with deciding on when to switch channels between weirdo songwriting and pure noise (adding a little spice of the brown noise variety along the way). That's half of the story of course, because after the "normal" sets of the first night we resumed our positions (with our friends ilan and dimitris joining in), quickly did away with any pop residues that were left in our system, and proceeded with a glorious full-on noise/equipment trashing/audience participation thing (see video in the previous post).

as i said though, this is not where this recording's from. this is from when i set-up my mixing board, 4-track, microphone and pedals along with the guys' 2 turntables. while everyone was elsewhere doing better things, i put on the first 2 records i could find, set-up some feedback on the board and ended up with this rough-but-charming intro to what was soon to take place that night

performs research center for the pursuit of happiness, xanthi branch

staying for the better part of the year in the lovely city of Xanthi (in the greek northeast), but in a less than ideal situation, i've spent most of my free time doing random walks in the city (mostly in the older part). With my trusted minidisc at hand i've turned some of those walks into soundwalks. Some of the sounds captured you can listen here:
